The Acting Attorney-General Honourable Siromi Turaga, convened a meeting yesterday with key stakeholders involved in Fiji’s carbon market work, bringing together those who have laboured diligently on this important national endeavour.
The gathering provided a timely opportunity to reflect on the journey undertaken so far, take stock of what has been accomplished, and chart a constructive path forward following the conclusion of Fiji’s Emission Reduction Program Agreement.
In his opening remarks, Hon Turaga expressed his gratitude to all present for their continued commitment and service.
He emphasized that the meeting’s purpose extended beyond merely evaluating the current status; it was also to recognize the efforts already contributed by stakeholders and to discuss how that groundwork could be advanced with commitment and alignment to Fiji’s national interests.
Stakeholders shared the legal, policy and operational work completed to date, including the development of proposed governance arrangements.
There was a spirit of genuine consensus in the room: while the termination of the ERPA has brought one chapter to a close, the collective effort invested by all parties retains enduring value. That work, it was agreed, stands ready to inform and guide the implementation of Part 10 of the Climate Change Act and the development of a coherent national framework and standards for future carbon market participation.
In a spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility, the stakeholders affirmed their commitment to continue working together under a Government led approach to carbon market governance.
This collective resolve reflects a shared understanding that Fiji’s engagement in carbon markets must be guided by consistent national standards, sound institutional frameworks, and the long-term wellbeing of the Fijian people.
