
Cabinet Subcommittee on Legislation Meets to Advance Key Legislative Priorities
9 July 2026The Office of the Attorney-General continues to play an important role in ensuring Government decisions are lawful, constitutional and in the best interests of the people of Fiji.
The Acting Attorney-General Honourable Siromi Turaga highlighted this while delivering his 2026–2027 National Budget Response in Parliament this morning.
Hon Turaga said the Office continues to provide legal advice across Government, represent the State in court, draft legislation, support Fiji’s participation in regional and international legal matters, administer key regulatory functions, and maintain Fiji’s online legal database.
For the 2025-2026 Financial Year the Office prepared 705 legal opinions, conducted 39 independent legal assessments, and reviewed 1,854 Memorandum of Understanding, Memorandum of Agreement and Cabinet papers.
From January to June this year the Office has already prepared 282 legal opinions, completed 14 independent legal assessments,reviewed 1,709 MOUs, MOAs and Cabinet papers and manage 1,304 active litigation files across a wide range of legal matters.
He acknowledged the dedication and professionalism of the Office’s staff, noting that while its 25 lawyers continue to manage an increasing legal workload, they are supported by a committed team of corporate and administrative officers whose contributions are essential to the efficient delivery of the Office’s services.
Hon Turaga said the collective efforts of both the legal and corporate teams ensure that Government receives timely legal advice, legislation is drafted efficiently, and the Office continues to effectively safeguard the Government’s legal interests.
Since taking office, the People’s Coalition Government has tabled 95 Bills in Parliament, with 82 enacted into law.
He also acknowledged the work undertaken by the Legislative Drafting Section, a specialised team of 10 lawyers and a legal drafter consultant who work diligently behind the scenes to draft legislation, review amendments and provide the legal foundation for Government reforms
He said the continued achievements of the Office reflect the commitment, professionalism and dedication of its entire team, who work collectively to uphold the rule of law, strengthen good governance and support Government’s vision for a more effective and responsive public service.
