MR JOHN RABUKU

Mr. John Rabuku is a seasoned criminal law practitioner and senior public prosecutor with more than 27 years of legal experience in Fiji and across the Pacific region.
He graduated from the University of the South Pacific Law School in 1997 and 1998 and began his career as a State Prosecutor in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), serving from 1998 to 2004. He subsequently entered private practice as an Associate at Young & Associates in Lautoka from 2004 to 2006.
In 2006, M was appointed a Magistrate, serving in both Lautoka and Ba until 2009. That same year, he was appointed Acting Director of Public Prosecutions for the first time. He then returned to private practice in 2010.
M’s regional contributions began in January 2014 when he was appointed Public Defender for Nauru, where he led the establishment of Nauru’s national Legal Aid system. His work in Nauru expanded further when, in 2016, he became Senior Government Counsel in the Ministry of Justice, working directly under the Secretary for Justice. In 2017, he was appointed Director of Public Prosecutions for Nauru, a position that placed him at the forefront of prosecutorial leadership in the island nation.
He returned to Fiji in 2019 and worked as a legal consultant, primarily handling criminal and family law matters. In 2021, he founded John Rabuku Lawyers, a boutique Suva-based firm specialising in criminal and family law.
In October 2023, following the passing of Acting DPP Ratu David Toganivalu, M was appointed Acting Director of Public Prosecutions for the second time. In August 2024, he was appointed Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the Anti-Narcotics Division, leading Fiji’s national strategy and prosecution of narcotics-related offences.
In March 2025, he was transferred to the Lautoka Office to head the Western Division, overseeing all prosecutorial operations from Rakiraki to Sigatoka.
M’s career reflects a deep commitment to justice, institutional development, and strengthening prosecution services both in Fiji and the wider Pacific.
