The First Session of Public Awareness and Civic Education
24 April 2026The Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Honourable Siromi Turaga, met with the Regional Director of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr Regis Savioz, to discuss Fiji’s continued commitment to the implementation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the progress of the Red Cross Bill.
The meeting focused on strengthening Fiji’s efforts to ensure that international humanitarian rules are respected and implemented.
Fiji is a State Party to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949, as well as Additional Protocols I and II of 1977 and Additional Protocol III of 2005.
During the discussions, Mr Savioz reaffirmed the importance of countries maintaining their commitment to these international agreements, particularly at a time when global disruptions and geopolitical tensions continue to affect many parts of the world.
International Humanitarian Law is a set of rules designed to limit the effects of armed conflict. It protects persons who are not, or are no longer, participating in hostilities and places limits on the means and methods of warfare.
Mr Savioz also encouraged Fiji to consider participating in the Global Initiative on IHL and to explore the establishment of a National IHL Committee.
Such a committee would provide a permanent mechanism for coordination among relevant ministries and national authorities to support the implementation of IHL through national measures, including legislation.
The Office of the Attorney-General continues to work closely with international partners and stakeholders to strengthen Fiji’s legal frameworks and uphold international humanitarian principles
